Thank you for your interest in the Remora App. The Remora App enables users to track when they use, or refuse to use, single-use plastic items such as take-out containers and snack wrappers. The Remora App was designed for research purposes by Eckerd College and there is no charge to download and use the Remora App. The data provided by Remora App users will be anonymized and aggregated and available to researchers and the public.

This Privacy Policy describes how Eckerd College (referred to as “the College” or “we” or “us” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information collected from and about users (“you” or “your”) of the Remora mobile application and any website that may be linked to it (“Remora App”). Please review this Privacy Policy carefully. By using the Remora App, you agree to the collection, use, and processing of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not download or use the Remora App or provide your personal information to us.

Scope of This Privacy Policy:

We use the term “personal information” in this Privacy Policy to refer to information that identifies, relates to, describes, or is reasonably capable of being associated or linked, directly or indirectly, to you. We collect personal information you submit to us directly and data that is transmitted automatically when you use the Remora App.2This Privacy Policy does not apply to aggregated and anonymized information, which is information that has been modified in a substantial way so that it no longer can reasonably be used to identify or be linked to an identifiable individual.

Personal Information You Provide To Us:

When you set up a Remora App account, we ask for your:
• Username and unique password for your account
• E-mail address
• Country
• Postal code
• Month and year of birth (not stored in our database for users under age 18)
• Gender (optional)
• Ethnicity (optional)
• Education level (optional)
• Account privacy settings.

When you use the Remora App to record your uses and refusals of plastic, we ask you to record:
• Name of single use item category (e.g., coffee cup)
• Action type (e.g., use or refusal)
• Count (how many items you used or refused)
• Caption (entered by user --- e.g., on vacation).

Please see the section titled “ Protection of Personal Information ,” which describes the measures Eckerd College takes to safeguard personal information. Automated Data Collection when you download, access, and use the Remora App, cookies and other internet technologies will automatically collect the following types of data from your device. For information about how you can restrict some automated data collection, see “ How You Can Restrict Automated Data Collection ” below. Location Data. With your consent, when you use the Remora App, the following geolocation data will be automatically recorded in real-time using a Google API (application programming interface) or other GPS service:
• Zip code of location where data entry was made (taken from location services or Google API if user enters exact business name)
• Name of commercial location if entered by the user and is available via Google API or other services)
• City of data entry
• Country of data entry.3Cookie Data Collection.

When you use the Remora App, we and third parties we authorize may use cookies and other automated technologies to help us:
(1) recognize your device when you sign in
(2) keep track of whether you are signed in or have previously signed in
(3) perform analytics, measure traffic and usage trends, and better understand the demographics and other attributes of our users
(4) diagnose and fix technology problems
(5) otherwise improve the Remora App.

How You Can Restrict Automated Data Collection:
You can restrict how cookies and similar tools are used to collect data from your device by managing the preference settings on your device. How We Use Personal Information We Collect:

We use personal information to collect information about single-use plastic and connect with users, including to:
• Register new user accounts
• Provide, operate, and improve the Remora App
• Build a database of information about plastic use and refusals for research purposes based on data provided by our users
• Respond to requests for information, and providing customer support
• Monitor and analyze trends, usage, and activities in connection with the Remora App
• Protect the Remora App and our users by investigating suspicious activity and unauthorized access.

How We Share Personal and Other Information:

Eckerd College does not sell personal information, nor do we share personal information for behavioral advertising purposes. Third-Party Service Providers. We share information, including personal information, with third-party service providers we use to provide hosting for and maintenance of the Remora App, backup, storage, data analytics and other services for us. These third-party service providers may have access to or process your personal information for the purpose of providing these services for us. We do not permit our third-party service providers to use the personal information that we share with them for their own commercial purposes. See the section titled “ Protection of Personal Information .” Researchers and the Public. Data generated by the Remora App is made available to researchers and the public on an aggregated and anonymized basis. The Remora App data is stored in pseudonymized form with Amazon Web Services. The key is stored separately and maintained under security safeguards by Eckerd College.4Security and Protection. We also reserve the right to disclose personal information or other information that we believe, in good faith, is appropriate or necessary to (i) take precautions against liability, (ii) protect ourselves and our users from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses or activity, (iii) investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations, (iv) protect the security or integrity of the Remora App and any facilities or equipment used to make the Remora App available, or (v) protect our property or other legal rights, enforce our contracts, or protect the rights, property, or safety of others. With Your Consent: We may also share personal information with third parties when we have your consent to do so.

Protection of Personal Information:

The data submitted by Remora App users is stored by Eckerd College. We follow Institutional Review Board best practices for academic research by pseudonymizing the user’s personal information. This means that each user is assigned a random, anonymous code, and the key that links the code to a specific individual is available only to authorized personnel of Eckerd College who have a need to know that information to perform their job responsibilities. The data derived from the Remora App
will be aggregated and made anonymous before it is available to researchers and the public. We maintain organizational and technical measures designed to safeguard your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, or use. Personal information is encrypted before it is transmitted to third-party vendors. Third-party vendors are required to have a privacy policy that is consistent with this Privacy Policy and the vendor is prohibited from sharing identifiable Remora App data with any other person or entity without the written consent of Eckerd College.​ The Remora App permits you to create an account. When you do you will be prompted to create a username and password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password, and you are responsible for any access to or use of your account by someone else who has obtained your password, even if that person was not authorized by you. You should notify us of any unauthorized use of your password or account, and, if any unauthorized use is suspected, you should immediately reset your password. Neither people nor systems can operate in a fully secure manner and no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic data storage is fully secure. While we use reasonable efforts to protect your personal information and select third-party service providers we believe also use reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee the security of the personal information you provide to us. If you have reason to believe that your information submitted to us is no longer secure (for example, if you feel that the security of any account you have with us has been compromised), please immediately notify us of the problem. Retention of Personal Information We will retain identifiable personal information as long as you are actively using the Remora App and for applicable record-keeping purposes.

Minors’ Personal Information:

The Remora App is available to anyone age 13 or older. However, the “use and refusal” data entered by a user who is under age 18 is not available to researchers and the public, even in anonymized form. The data entered after a user reaches age 18, will be included in the anonymized dataset available to researchers and the public. The Remora App is not directed toward children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information about children under the age of 13 without verifiable consent from a parent or legal guardian. Processing of Personal Information in the United States:

Company operates under United States laws and regulations. If you reside or are located in a different country, the data protection laws of that country may differ from the laws of the United States in the ways your personal information is protected. We want you to understand that when you open an account with the Remora App and provide information to us you are giving your consent to (1) the transfer of your personal information to the United States, and (2) the processing of your information in accordance with the laws of the United States and the guidelines of this Privacy Policy. Changes to this Privacy Policy We reserve the right to amend this Privacy Policy at any time in order to address future developments, changes in industry trends, or changes in legal requirements. If we alter the terms of this Privacy Policy, we will post the revised Privacy Policy on the Remora App and provide other notification as required by applicable law. Any changes will become effective upon the posting of the revised Privacy Policy on the Remora App. You can determine when the Privacy Policy was last revised by referring to the Effective date legend on the top of this Privacy Policy. By continuing to use the Remora App following such changes, you will be deemed to have agreed to such changes. If you do not agree with any or all of the terms of our Privacy Policy as in effect at any time, you should not continue to use the Remora App.
